Description

In this workshop, I will teach you the elegant calligraphic style of the Foundational Hand. This style was developed by Edward Johnston (1872–1944), one of the pioneers of contemporary calligraphy, who drew inspiration from Carolingian minuscule. The Foundational Hand serves as an excellent starting point for beginners learning broad-edge calligraphy. For more experienced calligraphers, it offers a beautiful, modern, and versatile style with numerous possibilities for variation. I will guide you in correctly spacing and constructing letters, starting from basic strokes to letterforms and their variations. You will receive comprehensive handouts, supplementary recordings, and homework exercises for practice. You’ll finish the workshop with a solid understanding of the Foundational Hand and the confidence to start using it in your work.

Supply List:

A set of broad-edged nibs and penholders. I recommend 2–5mm nib (Brause Bandzug, Leonardt TAPE Nib, or Speedball C2). (H134, H129, N02, N01, N09) Alternatively, you can use a Pilot Parallel Pen 5 mm or 3.8 mm. (FP67)
Black gouache or non-waterproof ink. (I08, S1621)
A3 paper pad. The paper shouldn't be too heavy so that you can see the guidelines through. I recommend Fabriano Schizzi, Daler Rowney Fine Grain, Canson Marker, or similar. (P32, P2027, P25)
B2 pencil, ruler, eraser. (S861, PL38, S270, E13)
A rag and a set of containers for water and paint. (S1005, S1695)
An old or cheap brush (for loading the nib with the ink). (BR43)
