Description

Hermann Kilian (1929 – 2004) was a German calligrapher, typographer and book designer whose work was epitomized by classical simplicity with an underlying tension within every letter. I have been studying his works and sharing my study of his Built-up Capitals during the last five years, and I have never gotten tired of it. This time, I will share my study of his minuscules that has been lifting my calligraphy study.

This workshop starts with learning traditional monoline minuscules including Italic Hand, English Round Hand and the Foundational Hand to understand the basic minuscule form and its spacing. Then we will analyze several of Kilian's minuscule forms to find his writing rules and figure out how he wrote/drew his letters. For our exercises, we will draw skeleton forms first and add weight by building up the forms with ruling pens, pointed pens and small edged nibs.

Once we have learned his forms, we can use them for different opportunities and the unique form will add vitality to our works. We will design a broadside piece in larger scale and/or a book page in smaller scale for our project.
