Description

The class will focus on Italic Letterforms; the finer points and variations.

Finer points means all of the design and little touches to refine your Italic. A more developed and technically challenging approach than the familiar, beginning Italic will be presented, with advanced ideas toward letter design and page design.
Advanced is subjective; but I mean that some of the techniques and concepts will be more advanced than what is presented in a beginning Italic class and may not be suitable for beginner.

Basic workshop tools: If you like working on slanted board, tape, cloth, water jars, paper for hand-guard (or glove if that is your preference), Palette for color mixing, Eraser. Ink-loading brush. Straight edge/t square, Possible a battery operated (or USB) desk light, if you require decent light. Pen holders (that fit your nibs-obviously)
  • PL21. Mechanical pencil: I like .03, but .05 will be OK. Any SHARP pencil.
  • N02, N04, N09, N207. Broad-Edged pens, Brause, Mitchell or Speedball nibs. Some larger like 4mm, and some smaller.
  • N72, N77, N74, N113, N86. Pointed nibs: Gillot 303, Hunt 101 Nib, Gillott 404 Nib, Nikko, Hunt 56 (school round pointed)

Recommended Optional supplies:

  • WNG1, HG749. Gouache: a couple of colors (?)

  • S1112-LED. 32x loupe (for examining nibs), or at the very least, a magnifying glass. You will need good magnification if you want to see how we are shaping our nibs.
  • Better paper you like, i.e.
