Description

I'm really excited to be teaching with the Gentle Penman again this year and branching off from our last workshop, this year will be a bit more intense (don't worry if you're a beginner this will definitely be suitable for you too).  I will guide you through the whole process to create this "Be Kind" piece, or more importantly to guide you to find your own style and technique to make a piece that is uniquely yours.

In the first class we will focus on drawing out the word "Be Kind" using the Versal script.  Focusing on the layout of the piece and how to alter and tweak the letter forms when you combine the letters together. 

In the second class we will spend time transferring our outline onto the watercolour paper and then finish off the class with brainstorming pattern designs and filigree for your letters. 

For the third class we will look at some of the tools used in gilding and learn how to create a raised gold effect when gilding the letters using 23k loose gold leaf and instacoll. 

We will then finish the class off by working on paintbrush techniques, how to practice having more control of your brush when painting in the patterns and the filigree around the letters.

- Mechanical Pencil (PL21)

- Washi tape (S1676) 

Gilding:
- Gilder’s Bole powder & Q-tip (i.e. cotton bud) (optional- used for transferring design onto the watercolour paper but normal graphite will do too.) (S455)
- Kolner’s Instacoll or Miniatum Ink (S892, S760)
- Small container for diluting Instacoll (S844)
- Distilled water
- Toothpick (to mix the Instacoll)
- Brush Cleaner (The Masters Brush Cleaner & Preserver) (S930)
- Fabriano Artistico Watercolour Paper (Hot Press) 140lb (300gsm) (or any HP Watercolour you may have at home) (PS115)
- Small synthetic brush – for applying Instacoll (BR30, BR49)
- Grafix Acetate Pad .003 Clear (Optional – depending on whether you choose to use Loose Gold Leaf) (P66)
- Loose Gold Leaf (W&B Gold Leaf 23K) (S188)
- Agate Dogtooth Burnisher (S1667, S2023, S2024)
- Gilders mop to brush off gold leaf (optional)
- Kneaded eraser (E09)

Painting :
- Gouache (I would suggest choosing 2 colours and titanium white) (WNG1-4, HG749)
