Want to learn calligraphy properly but feel a bit intimidated? (Or perhaps that describes someone you know?) This course is designed to make it easy, fun, and approachable! You’ll start with the timeless uncial script, a simple yet elegant style that’s perfect for beginners as well as continuing students—while also covering the essential skills that every calligrapher needs. In this class, you’ll:
-- Master the basics of uncial calligraphy
-- Learn about calligraphy tools and how to use them effectively
-- Develop good practice habits to improve quickly
-- Find out how a light pad can enhance your lettering
-- Gain confidence in creating calligraphy projects
-- Design and paint your own personalized decorated letter
Whether you’re brand new or looking to refine your technique, this step-by-step course will set you up for success in calligraphy!

• Standard lined notebook paper (8½ x 11” or legal size; loose-leaf or bound, as you prefer). Qty: about 20 sheets
• Standard notebook with lined (or gridded) pages (separate from previous item). Qty: 1
• Favorite materials for taking notes
• Paper towels. Qty: 1 roll
• (Optional but highly recommended) Binder (3-ring or similar) for handouts/other papers. Qty: 1
• (Optional but highly recommended) Sheet protectors, for letter-size handouts. Qty: 25+
• S1682, S5001, S5005, S3040, or S1705. (Optional) Zipper bag for holding pens, ink cartridges, etc. Qty: 1
• S1005, S1151, S1694, or S1685. Rinse water container 
• S412 or S931. Painter's tape or artist’s tape 
• E06. Eraser 
• S271. Ruler, 18" 
• S632. Protractor 

Writing/drawing/embossing tools:
• PL21. Pencil. Suggested: GraphGear 500 with 0.5 mm lead. Qty: 1
• FP67. Parallel Pen(s) in 3.8 mm size (REQUIRED) and 2.4 mm size (optional). Qty: 1
• M218. Pigma Micron fine-point marker (in BLACK ink), size 01, or similar *waterproof* marker. Qty: 1
• S1038. Embossing tool (a.k.a. Stylus)—Need ball ends of approximately 1.8 mm *and* 3.0 mm. Qty: 1
• (Optional) Other pen(s)/pencils(s)of your choice, possibly in different colors (for drawing guidelines)

Inks/paints:
• FP69 or FP70. Ink cartridges for Parallel Pen, your choice of color(s) (you can substitute another kind of suitable ink). Qty: at least 6 cartridges
• S1000. Coliro (a.k.a. FineTec) watercolor paint, Arabic Gold color. Qty: 1 pan.
• S2013, S1660, S959, S3041, S609, FP107, S1032 [12-A or 36-color set], or S808. Watercolor paints, assorted non-metallic colors (a basic pan set of watercolors is fine); the most useful colors for this workshop will be bright shades of blue, green, purple, and possibly red. Qty: 1 set
• S1113. (Optional) Storage case for the Coliro Arabic Gold paint (recommended if you buy it as an individual pan of paint [refill]). Qty: 1

Brushes:
• BR104, BR49, or BR80. Small round (pointed) brush, size 0 or smaller. Size 000 (a.k.a. 3/0) suggested. Qty: 1

Papers:
• PS42, PS47, PA42, PS115, PS01 and/or PA03. Watercolor paper of your choice, white or off-white, something fairly smooth and non-bleeding (get Hot Press rather than Cold Press or Rough Press if you have the option). Medium weight (about 140#) is suggested but not required. Recommendation: get (A) two large sheets of Arches Hot Press (90# or 140#) *or* Fabriano Artistico Hot Press (140#), and (B) (optional) one half-sheet or two smaller sheets of Arches Text Wove. Qty: at least two large sheets total (*some* projects can be done on smaller sheets)
• P22, P56, P55, P21, P38, or P80. Grid paper, non-bleeding; get approximately 11×17” size paper if possible, but letter-size/A4 paper is also acceptable. Qty: 1 pad
• P09-50, P32 or P203. Layout bond paper or layout marker paper, letter-size or larger. Qty: about 10 sheets
• PA79 or P2026. Envelopes, white or off-white, larger sizes preferable, with better-quality paper. Qty: At least 10 (identical) envelopes
• PA101. (Optional) Fine art paper sample sheet pack. If you don’t already have strong favorites in watercolor paper, highly recommend getting this sampler pack for testing. Qty: 1
