In this short workshop, we will learn about the interesting design possibilities offered by a type of paisley decoration that was used in the 16th and 17th century joint to calligraphic works.

We are going to learn the basics of paisleys shapes and their variations first and then apply it to Copperplate Majuscules in three different designs types. Each type of decorated majuscules to match different uses according to your needs.

We will learn how to apply the paisley decorations to the oval and soft shapes of our beautiful Copperplate majuscules, how to best match the interesting texture created by the paisleys to the elegance of Copperplate and how to fix mistakes while we design! Paisleys are a very versatile decoration and allow for many corrections, don’t be afraid.

We have endless possibilities of colouring with modern materials and we will play with tones and shades that will make for even more interesting and varied design possibilities.

Supply List:
- Layout / cartridge / Fabriano Accademia or your favourite paper (A4 size will be fine for pencil drafts, smaller sized paper to ink your final work) (P25, P69, P32)
- H pencil (PL38), sharpener (PL70, PL13), rubber (E13, E09)
- Ruler (10cm or longer) (S270)
- Straight Pen holder for the Paisleys (H113, H111)
- Pointed nib (medium flexible pointed nib, avoid the Gillott303 for this class) Cecilia will be using the Departementale Cementée 2552 nib (N113, N93)
- Either ink (I28, I04)/ gouache (WNG1, HG749)/ watercolour paint (WNWC1, HW100)/ watercolour metallics (S1000) for the Paisleys
- For lesson 2 have some Copperplate Majuscules ready to be decorated with our Paisleys to avoid working near wet ink with the paisleys
