Calligraphy has long been paired with paintings, ornamental scroll work, and other pictorial elements to enhance visual impact. In this workshop, we will explore the relationship between ovals and curvatures, learning how to use them strategically to create a peacock adorned with cartouches and scroll work.

While this may seem intimidating at first, with practice, you will be able to execute graceful scroll work and flourishing with ease. The techniques covered in this workshop will also be applicable to your daily calligraphy practice, helping you develop your own creative flourishes, animals, and objects.

In this workshop, you will learn:

• Cartouches and how to expand on their design.
• Floral flourishing and arrangements to elevate your designs.
• Movement exercises for body awareness to achieve confident curvatures.
• Principles for creating harmony with curvatures.
• Stroke analysis and deconstruction.
• Troubleshooting common difficulties and errors.
• Techniques for achieving a lighter hand.

Lesson 1
We will explore the relationship between ovals and variations in cartouches. We'll discuss basic strokes, various curvature combinations, and common pitfalls to avoid.

Lesson 2
We will focus on floral flourishing and the arrangements you can add to enhance your designs.

Lesson 3
We will discuss the anatomy of a peacock and begin our creation of pictorial flourishing, and how to add embellishments together with floral flourishing to elevate our design.
