Class Cost : HKD 1,170.00 or USD 150

Supply List:

  • Black lead and red lead pencils (PL38, PL05)
  • Pencil eraser (E13)
  • A good oblique penholder (H114, H134)
  • Proper Ink: Michael recommend Iron Gall ink , or Walnut Ink for practice. Carbon-based inks such as Moon Palace, Higgins Eternal, or Sumo are okay but tend to be a little thick. It may be advisable to add a little water to them. Michael will explain and demonstrate this in the workshop (S449, I145, I08)
  • Pen Points: Any of the following will work (personally, Michael always use a Nikko G) Nikko G, Zebra G, or Tachikawa G, Leonardt Principal, although not recommended for beginners. Gillott 303 or 404, Hunt 22 or 101 & Brause 66EF (N118, N113, N120, N74, N77)
  • Paper: Any good ink jet laser copy paper will do. Michael suggest a 24lb. basis weight. Lined Rhodia, Clairfontaine, or Japanese Mnemosyne paper are also excellent. You may wish to also try 24lb. “Resume Paper” which contains 25% cotton fiber content. It is not as smooth as the others listed above, so there is a bit more “tooth” and friction on the pen point as you write. After a while, you may find this to be helpful. It limits the tendency of a very smooth-surfaced paper (which offers no friction or resistance to the point due to the ink’s lubrication of the writing process) to let your pen unintentionally “slide off course” when you point changes direction in the writing of letterforms. (P54, P35, P64, P69)
  • Tracing paper (P112)
  • Grid (Graph) paper (P22)
  • Cushion Sheet: Very important. Preferably either a sheet or blotter paper or several sheets of soft constructions paper
  • Low-tack tape, such as Drafting Tape, Washi Tape, or any low- adhesive tape (S412, S1676, S1145)
  • Lined tablet paper to take notes
  • A sheet of paper towel
  • A small container of water to clean your pen points (S1005, S1695)
