We will explore, refine, and simplify the elegant Spencerian Script developed by Platt Roger Spencer, a founding father of a popular cursive handwriting system. On Day One, we will cover some simple warm-up exercises, understanding the movement and its basic structure, briefly introducing its rules, skeleton, and principal strokes in lowercase letters and numerals. By the end of the day, we will learn to see its transition to Ornamental Penmanship and Modern Spencerian. On day two, I will slowly learn the uppercase and light shading to the letterforms in lowercase and uppercase letters, start using the uppercase, and briefly learn to combine the letters. We will consider how to develop a rhythm in writing, with the option of using muscular movement to build up consistency, and how to enjoy practising at home. The class is open to all levels. It is a good introduction for beginners but also beneficial for those wanting to refine their existing skills in this type of Script.
