ALL SKILL LEVELS | BROAD-EDGE PEN
The Uncial hand is one of the oldest styles of writing (circa 1st century A.D.) that has been modernized and is still very much in use today. This majuscule lettering, derived from Roman capitals and Rustic letterforms, was used predominantly in transcribing Biblical texts for Books of Hours and monastic archives and libraries.
A well-traveled hand, Uncial contains interesting variations due to its wide use in Africa, Italy, Greece, Ireland, France, and Spain. Its absence of an ascender/descender system allows students of all levels to grasp this hand quickly and easily, combining it with other styles for broader expression and use.
Students will learn its history, ductus, and how to analyze and modernize it for themselves using Edward Johnston’s 7-point system.
