Class Overview - All Skill Levels
This is an introductory class to Spencerian Script - a historical style that was developed in America in the 1840s by Platt Rogers Spencer. Studying Spencerian helps to improve your overall handwriting; its elegant and graceful style can be used for daily correspondence - handwritten letters, stationery designs, wedding invitations, and much more. This course is tailored for complete beginners or calligraphers of any level to finesse their dip pen calligraphy skills. This introductory class will cover a brief history of Spencerian Script, an explanation of the tools used, the fundamental principles of the alphabet of both minuscule and majuscules, ligature (letter connections), and tricks and tips to achieve the thick swells and delicate hairlines.

• Oblique pen holder (H114, H129)
• A pointed pen nib (stiffer nib for beginners, e.g., Zebra Titanium G, flexible nib for intermediate, e.g., Leonardt Principal EF) (N153, N113, N120)
• An ink that creates a fine hairline (e.g., walnut or Higgins Eternal or iron gall) (S449, I145, I08, I37, I160)
• Semi-transparent paper such as Canson marker paper (P32, P203, P09-50)
• Paper clips to hold guide sheets
