Lupfer’s Old English Variation – All Skill Levels
Stephen Ziller spent 2 years at the Zanerian College learning from E. A. Lupfer all of the lettering skills necessary to get a job as an engrosser. He saved some of his practice and final pieces of his schoolwork. You will be able to see this portfolio in class. After learning a broad pen lettering style, Lupfer encouraged his students to create variations. In our archives, we have a unique exemplar from Lupfer where he combined the traditional Old English, Fraktur and his imagination. It is this beautiful style that the class will focus on. He felt it was important to be able to have a repertoire of broad pen lettering styles and variations to work with. With these skills, an engrosser could then give their work a distinctive style. I enjoy using this unique Old English style and would like to share it with you to add to your skill sets.
