Description

If anyone asks me which scripts they should learn if they want to become a calligrapher, my answer will unhesitatingly be ‘Capitals and italic’. Capitals were the only letterform in the West from the 4th/5th centuries AD to the 9th century when the minuscule first made an appearance in Charlemagne’s reign. Italic is of course the great Renaissance script that restored legibility to writing following the Gothic period.

For the contemporary calligrapher, these two scripts have the potential for huge variation and that is what makes them such an essential part of our repertoire.

In this workshop, we will study Capitals from their skeleton forms to very formal, monumental letters and then we will move on to change their weights, sizes, shapes and personalities. Along the way, we will consider the interpretative use for the letters we make and how they can be used to enhance the texts we choose for our work.
