Gothic Textura is unmistakably known for its heavily angled letters and was used throughout most of Western Europe from about 1150 until deep into the 17th century. Not surprisingly, Johannes Gutenberg, known for revolutionizing book printing in Europe with his invention of the printing press, he used this Textura for his most famous work, the Gutenberg Bible. Textura can be considered the “foundational” of the many Gothic scripts. The Carolingian minuscule was its direct ancestor, whose curves and arches were broken down, creating a sacred style form. Gothic Textura, however, is more than a script from the distant past and has earned its place in contemporary calligraphy. We will explore historical letterforms as well as more recent examples. This hand is a joy to write and can be used for various forms of expression. In this workshop, we will dive deep into Textura and discover the various possibilities this script offers. You will learn how to apply Textura in minuscules, capitals and how to make words, as well as explore more informal letterforms. Classes will be held in English via Zoom. Live sessions will be recorded for online viewing up to two months after the last day of the workshop. After each session, students will have time to practice, ask questions on the class forum, and submit homework for feedback. Sessions are on October 25, November 8, and November 22, 2023—from 7 to 8:30 PM CET (Amsterdam time)
