Description

Originating in the 16th century, Fraktur is a script that still lends itself to performance today—if only for the pleasure of writing! The character of Fraktur lends itself perfectly to forming different variations; from light to heavy and from playful and agile to static. During our three online classes, we will dive into these variations and show how the adaptability of Fraktur allows calligraphers to create a wide spectrum of aesthetic expressions with this captivating script. Classes will be held in English via Zoom. Live sessions will be recorded for online viewing up to two months after the last day of the workshop. After each session, students will have time to practice, ask questions on the class forum, and submit homework for feedback. Sessions are on August 21, September 4 and September 18, 2024—from 7 to 8:30 PM CEST (Amsterdam time)

Supply List:

N09. Speedball C Calligraphy Nibs
PS22. Hahnemuhle German Ingres Paper
P32. Canson Pro-Layout Marker Pad
N27. Automatic pen
I04. Pelikan 4001 Ink
• Broad-edged pens: ±3 mm (think Speedball C1, C2) and some other smaller and larger sizes. You can use a brand you have experience with, but I prefer Speedball for its flexibility. For smaller pen sizes (±1mm) I often use Mitchell nibs in addition to Speedball. (N09, N04, N02)
• Paper: Layout paper, preferably A3 size or 11 x 17 inches, such as Daler & Rowney, Borden & Riley #37, Canson Pro Layout Marker, or a similar brand, as long as the paper doesn’t bleed. (P09-50, P32)
• Ink: Water-based black ink (Pelikan 4001 or something equivalent), as long as the paper doesn’t bleed. (I08, I04)
• A (mechanical) pencil, HB (PL21)
• Ruler (S271)
