Description

The Capitalis Quadrata, also known as Roman square capitals, is a style of ancient Roman lettering epitomized by the 4th century Codex Vergilius Augusteus. In this workshop, we will use this manuscript as a springboard to interpret the letters and create contemporary variants. With its distinct characteristics—high contrast between the thicks and thins and a significant range of pen-turning—it can be a fun and rewarding challenge to take on. The Roman square capitals are a pleasure to write and combine very well with other scripts—and it is much less intimidating and challenging to write than the monumental Roman capitals written with a broad nib. Don't miss the chance to learn this quirky capital hand, rarely taught today. Join us for this online calligraphy workshop with Capitals Quadrata in two 90-minute sessions. Classes will be held in English via Zoom. Live sessions will be recorded for online viewing up to two months after the last day of the workshop. After each session, students will have time to practice, ask questions on the class forum, and submit homework for feedback. Sessions are on August 12 and August 26, 2023—from 7 to 8:30 PM CEST (Amsterdam time).
