Romans have been our calligraphic foundation through the decades. They have a fascinating history of which we still follow, with a few adjustments. In this course we will begin with a solid understanding of these beautiful, classic letterforms, then take them in another direction of abstracting, stretching, playing and not being afraid of these gentle giants. By taking a more playful approach, we can let go of the “perfection” and enjoy the process and still understand the beautiful forms. Join us for the fun exploration and conquer these Rebel Romans.

• Pencil(s): regular #2 and a 2B or 4B (softer lead) (PL38)

• Pencil sharpener or sandpaper paddle for sharpening Ink (PL34, PL13)

• Mitchell nibs for smaller work: 4, 5, 6 or equivalent nibs will be fine. Barbara also recommend pointed nibs. She likes Nikko-G or Zebra-G (N04, N113, N118)

• C-Thru Ruler (length at least 12”) (S798)

• Eraser (white vinyl i.e. Tombow Mono or Stadler Mars) or what you have on hand (E22, E13)

• Practice paper (Recommend Canson Pro Layout Marker or other transparent paper) (P32, P25)

• Good paper: 90# Arches Hot Press, Stonehenge or your own favorite (PS42, PA42, PA110, PS110)

• Sumi and/or Walnut Ink (I43, I70, I145, S449)

• Gouache color favorites (HG749, WNG1)

• mixing well (S1094, S2005)

• water container (S1005)

• mixing brush (BR43)

• For a couple of projects: student will need a watercolor brush #4 or #6 (BR26, BR104) and watercolors (pan sets are fine for this) (S609, S3041, S1000)

• Painters’ Tape (S931)
