Description

Pure form, the quality of the line and the ornamental potential of writing - this is what it´s all about in this workshop class. We will play with letterform variations, experiment with layout ideas, and then finish it all up with a spark of gold. Our basic alphabet will be the Antiqua-letterforms; even if you have not tried writing them yet, your eye is used to them. We will practice and play with them, transform them and create new compositions. You will be led step-by-step through the creative process up to a final work. Gold will be incorporated and the sessions will also cover various glittering effects, highlighting techniques, and a very easy way of gilding. Let's have fun!

Supply List:

HB Pencil (PL38)
Mixing Brush (BR02)
Kneaded Eraser (E09)
Ruler (S270)
White Eraser (E13)
• sketchpad - any size (P108)
• bone folder (S308) or other hard, smooth surface (such as a burnisher or the back of a spoon)

PAPER:
• Paper sizes - Any sizes you have that you can use for final projects, depending on what size you want to use, such as 8" x 10", 9" x 12", 11" x 14"
• Good quality paper (Hotpress Watercolor paper such as 140 lb. Arches (P2050-Hot Press), BFK Rives (PS107), Arches text wove (PS01), or similar
• Black paper (200-300g) such as Artagain (P58-9x12)
• Tracing Paper (~ 70 g) (P112-9 x 12)

WRITING TOOLS:
• Broad-edge nibs (any combination such as Speedball C5-C3 (N09); and optionally Automatic pens 1/4"-1/2" (N27)

GOUACHE:
Your favorite colors…Andrea's favorite brand is Schmincke (SG27), but any other good quality brands such as Winsor & Newton (WNWC1), Lnel, Turner will work, too.

OIL PASTEL STICKS: 2 or 3 favorite colors; basic quality such as VanGogh is available in individual sticks. Make sure it is OIL pastel.

PIECE OF WHITE CHALK, soapstone pencil (in the quilting section of a fabric store) or other white pencil (S1134) for writing on black (S769)

EMBOSSING TOOL: (S478)

PLASTIC SLEEVE: such as from a greeting card sleeve or similar weight plastic sleeve

LIGHTPAD: If you do not have access to a lightpad (S939-12.5 x 17), you can use sunlight through a window. We will be doing small designs, so standing with your paper against a window with the image you want to trace underneath will work.

FINETEC or COLIRO: Metallic watercolor pan in gold such as Arabic gold (S1000-Arabic Gold 630) or Inca gold (S1000-Inca Gold 620) or any other basic gold tone

GOLD LEAF or BRASS LEAF:
Composite metal imitation gold, or if you have real gold leaf at home, you can use it, but the composite metal will work fine.
• Andrea usually uses 23.5 or 24 karat gold leaf (S189-5). Since gold leaf is expensive, brass leaf aka "composite metal" or "schlag metal" (S904) will also work well and is much cheaper. Sepp gilding imitation gold leaf works well.
• The real gold leaf should be transfer quality — which means it is attached to paper, so it is much easier to handle than loose leafs. Metal Leaf Sizing - Speedball/Mona Lisa sizing for metal leaf, or Instacol (S892) or Miniatum (S983)
