MONOLINE CALLIGRAPHY and HAND EMBOSSING with Viktor Kams When we think about block capitals and monoline calligraphy, automatically Rudolf Koch’s popular typeface Neuland comes to mind. But there is much more to monoline than the renown work of Koch. Its modular shapes can be very playful and uncover multiple posibilites in terms of composition and graphic visuals. Monoline calligraphy is great to explore calligrams and also to introduce ourselves to handmade embossing due to its solid and thick strokes which are somehow easier to approach when we intend to cut the letters with an x-acto knife. In this workshop we will explore my personal take on monoline calligraphy and how we can play with size, shape and composition variations before jumping to the hand embossing process where we will transform our design into an outstanding embossed piece of art. This class allows students to express themselves when creating their personal designs while following the techniques that I will share, step by step, to achieve a clean and sharp embossing. Embossing and debossing on paper are highly visual and very elegant techniques to practice by themselves or to combine with calligraphy. If you have ever seen works from calligraphers using this technique and have wondered how it is done, this workshop is for you.
