Explore the various possibilities of the draughtsman’s ruling pen and its modern variants. This workshop will be focused on how to use this tool and using it creatively to write letters. You will learn how to write expressively and create your own distinctive and individual letterforms. It’s time to have fun with letters!!

What you'll learn:

  • Understand the fundamental construct of a ruling pen and how to use it effectively to create beautiful strokes
  • Warm-up exercises and shadow strokes required to write expressive letters with a ruling pen
  • How to write a freehand expressive alphabet with a guided exemplar
  • How to write a modern capital alphabet with a guided exemplar
  • Layout and design for the composition of an artwork
  • Techniques to paint and decorate letters with watercolours
  • Comprehensive handouts for future reference

Supply List:

- Any ruling pen or folded pen of your choice (N22, N211, N208, N215, N148, N155)
- Good quality paper, ideally slightly rough or textured. Any drawing or sketching paper that does not bleed will be fine (P108, P2027, P2050)
- Inks of your choice. Will be great if you have colourful inks (I153, I07, I123)
