Costello Style Lettering – All Levels
In this class we will go through the steps of making a Costello style piece! Patrick W. Costello was easily one of thegreatest engrossers that has ever lived. His work was phenomenal and stood above the crowd. His engrossing consisted of brilliant lettering styles, strong illustration, and smooth shading. He incorporated portraiture in his pieces that really elevated his body of work from that of other engrossing artists as well. He resided in Scranton, Pennsylvania, so it will be exciting to study his work in his hometown! In this class we will walk through crafting a piece in the style of Costello’s work. First we will discuss layout and putting a design on the page. We will draft lettering as well as write it out with a dip pen. We will talk about illustration and go over how you might want to color it in. We will do the piece in his wash-work style and
use his classic Payne’s gray palette for soft classic shading! I am super excited to be doing this class with whoever
is joining!
