Description

N77. Hunt 101 Imperial.

A very steady and durable nib, the Hunt 101 is a great choice for projects that require larger writing with x-heights above 1/4". It can be used on most paper surfaces, though it can have a tendency to catch on the upstroke when used on a rougher surface. The Hunt 101 requires firm and deliberate pressure to open swells, while its strength and steadiness makes it an ideal selection for student practice. Bronze finish.

- Excellent for pointed pen scripts
- Good thick/thin contrast
- In JNB Pointed Nib Sampler (N154)
- Made in USA
- Bronze-finish steel
- Stamped on nib: 101 / Hunt / Imperial / U.S. A.

Shinah of Crooked Calligraphy notes that the Hunt Imperial 101 nib is "a super flexible nib with a very sharp point best suited for advanced calligraphers," and "because of its flexibility and sharp point" she finds this nib is "great for delicate styles that require a lot of control and precision, like Copperplate." Shinah discusses in more detail her five favorite nibs (Nikko G, Brause Steno, Brause 66EF, Leonard Hiro 41, and Hunt 101) here:  https://www.crookedcalligraphy.com/blog/choosing-calligraphy-nibs. She teaches a very popular, 8-week, live-taught online class, Modern Calligraphy 101.

Unlike so many other places, when you call John Neal during business hours a person answers the phone--right away!

    my first nib

    Posted by E. J. O'keefe on Nov 14th 2021

The Hunt 101 was my first nib for pointed pen calligraphy--it was one of the few nibs at my local art supply store. I'm happy now that it was my first nib instead of Nikko G or Zebra G--because I learned pressure control early on--though I recall it was a slow process. The G nibs were not available then.

I love the Hunt 101. I get the best results with it when I use Coliro paints.

Super lush thicks and delicate thins

Posted by Erica on Nov 3rd 2021

The Hunt 101 nib is fun waiting to happen! Super-lush thicks and delicate thins can be had by the controlled hand. It is a bit scratchy, but it is a good nib for you to learn control, cut loose, and flourish away. Just be gentle, and as you learn to use it be prepared for the occasional splat.

    Hunt 10, Brause 66ef, Nikko G

Posted by Martha on Oct 10th 2021

I love the Hunt 101 and the Brause 66EF. They are more flexible than the Nikko G ... which was too stiff for me. If you are used to the amount of pressure needed for the Nikko G, Zebra G, or Tachikawa G nibs, you will need to lighten your touch ... a lot... with the Hunt 101.

    I like it

I'm new to writing with pointed nibs and still working through some beginner problems, but I have found this nib to be one of the favorites out of my small collection. This is my learning pen and it's taught me a lot so far.
