Description

Hermann Killian was a German calligrapher, type designer, and book designer, whose work as a graphic artist epitomized the simplicity of classical forms, with each form having a tension and character of its own. Killian took pains to create each letter slowly and perfectly, working with the tools of his trade – the ruling pen and the simple broad-edge.

In this workshop students will study his work, look at classical (penned) Roman capitals then modernize them by changing their inter-letter and ligatured spaces. Stacked layouts and interactive letters will be the main focus of this workshop using a gold sgraffito technique, the brilliance of white on black and ruling pen and broad-nib with ink.

Supplies:

  • P09-50. Practice Paper A-3 1
  • N33. Long barreled ruling pen 1
  • S1092. Pointed stylus fine tip 1
  • S478. Pointed stylus regular 1
  • N02. Brause nibs 3/4mm, 1mm/ 1.5mm
  • A hemispherical nib. It is highly unlikely a Hemispherical nib will be found in any art supply shop. The nib looks like a pointed nib but has the tiniest nub on the end. You are likely to find one of these in a junk/antique shop where you find nibs sold by the gross. I suggest you search all those nibs you have stashed away and you may just find a few. You only need one.
