Foundations of Calligraphy by Sheila Waters, 2023 Edition

Am so happy to own this marvelous book - and a copy of the Sheila's Roundel of the Seasons, always in pride of place on my wall. A treasure!

I've been a calligrapher for close to fifty years, and, yes, even now find I need a good reference book to refer to at times, and Sheila's book is usually it. Foundations of Calligraphy is one of the best and should be in every calligrapher's library. Sandy

Sheila was trained in her native England and her move here decades ago changed the course of calligraphy in this country. She is the end all and be all of classic letterform. She has been a tireless and demanding teacher for so many years through her summer classes (now co-taught with Julian Waters) and at conferences and workshops; her influence is inestimable. This book is a gift to all who will never have a chance to study with her personally -- and everyone who has.

This is a great book with excellent instructions and ample exemplars to work from. I recommend this book for anyone looking to take their skills from beginner to intermediate level.

I attended one of Sheila Water's summer sessions taught at her home when she lived in Gaithersburg, Maryland. She was an incredible teacher and her book is the best one for traditional calligraphic hands.
