In my last workshop on Art Nouveau for BVCG I introduced ideas from the Berlin based calligrapher Hans-Joachim Burgert (1928-2009). They helped make sense of how to work from nature and think about composition. Now I want to present his ideas in greater depth, he had an original understanding of what calligraphy is. He worked across media as a printer, painter, sculptor and musician. His experiments with letters helped reshape the work of some of the most influential calligraphers of our time; they can reshape yours too. Across three days in this workshop, I share what I learned from Burgert in over twenty years of connection. This workshop includes presentations about Burgert's work in many media but our aim is not to imitate his forms; I present creative principles to be applied in our own context. The idea is to show an expanded range of possibilities available to all who seek to make letters that are both timeless AND resonant with our own age.
