Joy Vanides Deneen - Copperplate Flourishes & Variations

This four-week continuation course is designed for students who have completed Joy’s Level 1 courses (or previously studied Copperplate calligraphy) and are looking to delve deeper.

The course includes: - principles of flourishing - types of flourishes for lowercase and uppercase letterforms - how to design elegant, flourished words - an introduction to modern Copperplate variations - how to mix and use gouache and watercolour with the pointed pen - creation of a calligraphed quote, verse or passage Students are encouraged to scan and submit their weekly practice pages to Joy for feedback and critique.

Each live Zoom session will be recorded and available for viewing until July 9, 2023.

For this class, you will need the following supplies: - one penholder (options listed below) - 3 nibs (Nikko G, Leonardt 40 and Hunt 101) - one bottle of sumi ink - one bottle of white ink - a tube of gouache (colour of your choice) - palette of watercolours (optional) - one Dinky Dip inkwell - one pipet - a blank Rhodia pad - a few sheets of quality paper for final project (I recommend Bristol or Artagain pads) - a 3B drawing pencil - a ruler - a small container for water - a small dish or palette - a round synthetic brush for loading paint - paper towels - matches
