ALPHABETTER- TWO WEEKS OF LETTERFORM IMMERSION

Team taught by Brody Neuenschwander and Amity Parks It’s time to push your calligraphic boundaries! That is something Brody and Amity specialize in. We love to rethink and reshape the alphabet, teaching new tricks to those 26 scampering characters. And we do mean to push you! We will work on a new style of lettering every day. We’ll use hand-made pens that we will supply and old favorites that can be put to new uses. We’ll serve up ways to improve your hand and eye using pens, pencils and brushes. We’ll teach you to harden and cut goose quills and then use them in surprising ways to create expressive, contemporary calligraphy. This will truly be a workshop about writing. With a new style and variations served fresh each day, you will have an album of experimental calligraphy by the end of the workshop. We will focus on:
• Working spontaneously, but purposefully.
• Not thinking too much but being thoughtful.
• Avoiding perfectionism, but at times embracing precision.
• Graphic excitement.
• Letters as living things that grow and change.
• The pure joy of pen and ink.
• Binding your experiments into a Japanese stab-bound book.

Join us for an inspiring two weeks in Italy. We’ll spend time together creating, socializing, exploring, recharging and nourishing our minds and bodies! You will stay with us, in our house or in a house in the tiny village of Rapicciano, near Spoleto in Umbria, Italy. Home- cooked meals will be served in Casa Verna or its beautiful garden. Our prices include accommodations, almost all meals, day and night access to the studio, nine days of instruction, most art supplies, and two half-day field trips. There will be two free days mid- course to either explore the area or to stay and work independently. Class is limited to 8 Students, with plus-one options as well. Single and double rooms are available. Prices range from €2800 - €3800 per person, for the two-week session.
