Field to Frame: Developing Sketches into Compositions with Lara Call Gastinger

Join Lara Call Gastinger at the Pittsburgh Botanic Gardens as we sketch outside in the morning and work on documenting details about botanical specimens such as plant habit, measurements, and color information. After lunch, we will take this information back to the indoor classroom to compose and start a small painting. We will find out what sketches and notes are important to record when in the field to aid in creating an accurate painting. 

Supplies:

• P2047. Sketchbook
• PS47, PS110, PS115. One sheet 11 x 14 sheet hot press paper (140 lb) or similar
• PL38. Pencil (HB or F)
• M17. Pen (Micron 005)
• P43. Tracing paper
• BR91, BR22. Watercolor brushes (size 0, 2 kolinsky)
• S1695. Water dish
• HW100, WNWC1-4. Watercolor paints and mixing palette (this can be the same as your field set if they are high quality)
  • Colors I like include Schmincke Ultramarine blue, Schmincke Prussian, Schmincke lemon yellow, Winsor Newton New Gamboge, Winsor Newton Permanent Alizarin crimson, Schmincke Scarlet red, Schmincke Sepia, Daniel Smith Neutral tint)
