Description

Painting Late Summer Plants and Flowers with John Pastoriza-Piñol

Learning outcomes include:

  • Creating detailed sketches of different plants, focusing on buds, flowers, and leaves.
  • Capturing challenging angles of leaves and flowers.
  • Exploring composition techniques, such as creating more complex artwork.

The instructor will provide guidance on composition, painting techniques, and colour theory, which will be taught in class and assigned as homework. Participants in this course should have an intermediate to advanced skill level.

Class structure

This class will be a 3-day intensive workshop focused on enhancing your artistic skills and techniques. Throughout the course, we will have the opportunity to work with a variety of specimens (subject to availability) and explore different methods of accurately drawing them without relying solely on photographs. Additionally, we will expand our knowledge on applying paint, ranging from wet-on-wet to dry brush techniques. Furthermore, we will learn new strategies for presenting our artwork through clever composition, allowing us to create more visually dynamic pieces. Ultimately, this workshop aims to push our current abilities, enabling us to produce more detailed and complex works. The workshop will conclude with a comprehensive review session to consolidate our learning.

Dedicated time will be allocated for the purpose of reviewing work, providing constructive feedback, discussing progress, and addressing any queries. Participants will also have the opportunity to work on their projects independently. In the event that your artwork does not meet the desired stage as determined by the demonstrator by the end of the class, you may be requested to complete it as homework before the next class. This measure is intended to ensure that all students maintain a comparable level of progress in their artwork.
