The History of Pigment in Art with Jenny Rowe

Sat. October 19, 2:30pm-4:00pm

Civilizations first used combinations of clay, chalk, burnt wood, and animal fat as pigments 40,000 years ago with a palette consisting of five basic hues; black, brown, red, yellow, and white.   In the thousands of years since humans first played with pigment, the history of color has been one of discovery, innovation, and advancement resulting in the establishment of entire art movements and the creation of some of the world’s greatest artworks.

This presentation will explore the remarkable plants, animals, and minerals that have been used by humans throughout history, and the way in which they influence the art we create.  Learn about the changing nature of the artist’s palette, the intriguing myths and legends surrounding certain pigments, and the vibrant history of pigment in art as told by humankind over centuries.
