Dynamic Duo: Colored Pencil and Pan Pastel on Drafting Film with Jeanne Reiner

Translucent drafting film and colored pencils are ideal partners. This material is perfect for drawing fine details and intricate linework. Additionally, the use of Pan Pastels can enhance the vibrancy and luminosity of the drawings due to their highly pigmented nature. Drafting film affords the possibility of drawing on both sides of the paper therefore you will not only be able to tone your drawing on the reverse side you will also have the ability to adjust your colors, create an atmospheric fade, or add a soft-focus background.

Supply list:

  • Dura-Lar drafting film — provided by instructor*
  • Pan Pastels –provided by the instructor. If you have some, please bring them along
  • (PL38, PL16, PL05) Colored pencils - I prefer Faber Castell, Pablos, Caran d’Ache Luminance or Derwent lightfast. Please bring 1 white Primacolor Premiere colored pencil. Please bring a variety of colors that represent fall hues.
  • (PL38) Graphite pencil - for sketching – HB or your preferred hardness
  • (S978, BR104, BR26) Pan Pastel Tools such as a small sponge-tipped applicator. 1 small inexpensive brush which will be used to apply the pastel, I would recommend a round #4 synthetic brush.
  • (S781) Paper Stump (tortillion) – 2-3 small size
  • (S752) Drawing board - 11” x 14,” or slightly larger foamcore or smooth light board. You may find it helpful to find an item to prop up the board at an angle.
  • (P43, P112)Tracing paper - a few sheets to draw on and to protect your surface while you work.
  • (P85) White paper - for backing such as Strathmore Bristol 300 – 1-2 sheets 11x 14”

  • (E09, E22, E13) Erasers - kneaded eraser, a Tombow Mono Zero and a soft, white eraser

  • Magnifying glass
